A 128-tick server must complete one simulation step every 7.8 milliseconds. At 20 ticks the budget is 50 ms. That single number — not core count, not RAM, not bandwidth — determines which CPU tier can host your player count without the tick interval slipping. Miss the deadline by even a few percent on a sustained basis and players experience it as hit-registration lag long before any monitoring graph turns red.

Tick Interval and Simulation Budget

Tick rate

Interval

Safe sim budget (70%)

Typical use

20 tick

50.0 ms

35 ms

Survival, co-op, casual

30 tick

33.3 ms

23 ms

Survival PvP, mid-tier shooters

64 tick

15.6 ms

10.9 ms

Competitive shooters, baseline tournament

128 tick

7.8 ms

5.5 ms

Esports, faceit/league play

The 70% figure is deliberate headroom. If your average simulation time sits at 90% of the interval, ordinary variance — a player joining, a physics-heavy explosion, a garbage collection pause — pushes you over the deadline and the server drops a tick. Dropped ticks are visible in the client as stutter, and they cluster exactly when the action is densest, which is the worst possible time.

Single-Thread Clock Is the Binding Constraint

Game server simulation is overwhelmingly single-threaded. Very few engines parallelise the authoritative physics and entity update across cores; those that do (Source 2, newer Unreal netcode) still keep a primary tick thread. This means the metric that predicts tick stability is single-core performance, which is roughly the product of instructions-per-clock and frequency. A 16-core 2.4 GHz server loses to an 8-core 4.0 GHz server at the same tick target.

3.0-3.4 GHz, older architecture — holds 64 tick to roughly 24-32 players in a modern shooter; 128 tick collapses under any load.

3.5-3.9 GHz, current architecture — 64 tick to 48-64 players; 128 tick to roughly 20-24 players.

4.0-4.5 GHz, current architecture — 64 tick at 64+ players; 128 tick to 40-48 players.

4.5 GHz+ with large L3 cache — 128 tick to 64 players, provided other instances are pinned away.

Cache matters more than the clock table suggests. Simulation state is a working set that wants to live in L3; when it does not, every entity lookup becomes a memory trip costing hundreds of cycles. A CPU with 32-96 MB of L3 can hold tick stability at a lower clock than one with 16 MB. When comparing quotes, check the L3 figure, not just the boost clock headline.

Why Boost Clocks Lie on Rental Servers

Advertised 3.7 GHz nodes often run at 2.9 GHz under sustained all-core load. Three causes: thermal throttling when the chassis cannot dissipate the heat, power caps on the CPU package, and neighbour contention when a provider oversubscribes cores. On a dedicated machine the first two are yours to control and the third disappears. Verify actual frequency under load with
turbostat
or
lscpu
while the game server is at peak player count, not at idle.

Measuring Your Own Headroom

Instrument the tick loop. Log the 99th-percentile simulation time, not the mean — the mean will look healthy while the p99 shows you the stalls players feel. If p99 exceeds 70% of the interval, you are one busy moment away from dropped ticks. Raise headroom by reducing entity count, capping player count, or moving up a CPU tier. If the p99 is fine but the mean is high, you likely have a per-tick inefficiency, such as an unindexed entity query or a blocking disk read inside the loop.

Pin the tick thread to a dedicated physical core with its hyperthread sibling idle, and keep the OS, logs, and update jobs off that core. On a multi-instance machine, allocate cores so that no two tick threads share an L3 slice. Our dedicated server comparison covers which chassis expose per-core pinning and which hide it behind a hypervisor, and the full specs and pricing page lists the clock and cache figures you need to run this table against your own target.

Work backwards from the tick interval, not forwards from the core count. Pick the rate your game actually needs, apply the 70% budget, then choose the CPU whose single-thread performance holds that budget at your peak player count — and verify it under load rather than on the spec sheet.

Tick rate is a CPU workload, not a network setting.
