At 19:00 on a content patch, 300 players retry a full server every 10 seconds while 80 more are already in the world loading chunks. The result is a thundering herd: login queue, world streaming, mod downloads, and database reads all peak within the same 40 seconds. Capacity planning that uses steady-state concurrent player counts will size that box 30 to 40% too small.

The herd is not really about bandwidth. It is about the transient memory footprint created by half-loaded players, retry sockets, and the save/world data being re-read for each new join. This article breaks down where that memory goes, how to measure it, and how much headroom to add. Provisioning for it starts with a node that has room to grow, as described in the dedicated servers sized for game launch traffic.

What actually happens in the first 60 seconds

Most join paths do the same sequence: authenticate, fetch player state, load a region of the world, spawn entities, then hand off to the simulation. Each of these allocates memory that is released only after the player fully loads. A joining player can therefore hold 1.4 to 2.2 times their steady-state footprint for 10 to 30 seconds. On a 40-slot server with 25 simultaneous joins, that transient peak is where the out-of-memory kill happens.

Retry sockets add a second layer. When a server reports full or times out, most clients retry immediately or after a short backoff, so the connection table and the per-connection buffers persist for seconds after the actual join fails. A conntrack table sized for 50 concurrent players will fill during a 500-player retry storm, and the drops look like a DDoS to anyone reading the logs.

Measuring the ramp before you buy

You cannot size a herd from a single load test at steady state. Run three tests instead: a linear ramp adding 5 players per second, a step test adding 40 players at once, and a retry storm that opens 400 connections with a 20% acceptance rate. Record RSS every second and capture the peak, not the final value. The difference between peak and steady RSS is your headroom requirement.

Test

Ramp shape

Peak RSS vs steady

When it hurts

Linear

5 players/s

+12 to 18%

Moderate

Step

40 at once

+28 to 45%

Severe

Retry storm

400 conns, 20% accept

+8% RAM, +300% sockets

Conntrack, not RAM

A step test on a modded Minecraft server at 32 GB nominal showed a peak of 44 GB, which is why the box was killed by the OOM reaper at minute two of the launch. The steady-state number would have suggested 28 GB was plenty.

The real per-slot cost during a join

Steady-state figures for Minecraft Paper run 60 to 90 MB per player, but a joining player temporarily costs 150 to 220 MB because of chunk generation buffers and player data deserialization. Palworld runs 250 to 400 MB steady and 500 to 750 MB during join on a fresh world. Rust is the worst offender, with 300 to 500 MB steady and 900 MB to 1.2 GB transient on a large procedural map.

Minecraft Paper: 0.9 GB of headroom per 4 simultaneous joins.

Rust: 4 GB of headroom per 4 simultaneous joins.

Palworld: 2.5 GB per 4 simultaneous joins on a fresh world.

Valheim: 1.2 GB per 4 joins, more if many build pieces load at once.

Multiply by the expected simultaneous join count, not total slots. A 100-slot Rust server that admits 8 players in the same second needs roughly 2.4 GB of transient headroom on top of steady state, plus a 15% safety margin.

Why heap limits hide the problem

JVM-based servers cap the heap, so the OOM killer never fires and instead you get GC pauses. A Minecraft server with a 10 GB heap and 12 GB of physical RAM will spend 400 ms in full GC when the join burst pushes the live set to 9.5 GB, producing a tick spike that looks like network lag. The machine is not out of memory; it is out of room to postpone GC.

Set the heap to 65 to 70% of physical RAM and leave the rest for the OS page cache and native allocations. On a 32 GB box that means Xmx20G, not Xmx28G. This single change often removes the launch-day stutter without any CPU upgrade, and it costs nothing.

Compressing the herd with join queues

An unbounded join path is the reason a launch fails. If the server accepts every connection attempt at once, the transient memory peak is set by client behaviour rather than by your capacity. A queue that admits 4 players every 5 seconds smooths the ramp from a 40-player step to a 20-second slope and cuts the peak footprint by more than a third on the same hardware.

The queue needs a visible position and an honest estimate, or players retry out of frustration and undo the effect. Show a position count rather than a percentage, cap the queue at 2.5 times the slot count, and return a clear server-full response to anyone beyond that so the retry storm stays bounded.

Sizing the connection table for the herd

The herd has a second cost that has nothing to do with RAM: socket count. Every failed join attempt still consumes a conntrack entry until the timeout expires, so a 400-player retry storm can briefly triple the connection table even though only 40 players ever enter the world.

nf_conntrack_max defaults to 65536 on many kernels, which is enough for 5000 steady players but not for a retry storm on top. Set it to 262144 and raise nf_conntrack_buckets to 65536 so lookups do not degrade into a linked-list walk. Each entry costs about 300 bytes, so the table consumes roughly 75 MB at full size.

Also raise the listen backlog and the SYN queue on the game port, and shorten the retry backoff in the launcher where possible. A launcher that retries every 3 seconds instead of every 10 turns a manageable 200-player queue into a 900-connection-per-minute storm that no server handles gracefully.

Headroom formula for launch day

Use a simple formula: steady state per slot multiplied by expected concurrent players, plus transient per join multiplied by simultaneous joins, plus 20% for allocator fragmentation and page cache, plus 4 GB for the OS. For a 40-slot modded Palworld server with 10 simultaneous joins that is 10 GB plus 6.3 GB plus 3.3 GB plus 4 GB, or 24 GB, which rounds up to 32 GB.

Do not round down. The difference between 24 GB and 32 GB is one content patch, one heavier modpack, or one streamer driving 30 players to the server at once. RAM is the cheapest part of the machine per gigabyte and the most expensive thing to discover you lack at 20:05 on wipe day.

Validating the ramp on the live node

Before launch, run the step test against the production configuration with the real world save, real mods, and the actual launcher. Watch RSS, conntrack count, and tick p99 together. If conntrack saturates before RAM does, the fix is kernel tuning. If RSS climbs and does not fall back after joins complete, you have a leak in a plugin, not a sizing problem.

Keep 25% of RAM unallocated at all times and treat any sustained use above 80% as an upgrade trigger. When the herd outgrows the box, you can compare dedicated server capacity tiers for high-concurrency game launches and move up one RAM step rather than two, because the transient peak scales with simultaneous joins and those are capped by your queue design.

A wipe-day launch and a Tuesday evening are two different machines as far as memory is concerned.
