The first is steady state: 180 of 200 slots filled, tick time holding at 22 ms, memory flat. The second is the ramp: a content creator posts a link, 140 players join in eleven minutes, and the node hits its worst tick time of the week before it ever reaches its advertised population.

Ramp load multiplies work that steady load spreads across the whole session: world generation, chunk streaming, plugin init, permission lookups and whitelist checks. A node sized by steady-state slot counts can fall over at 90 joiners in five minutes. Sizing both profiles is the difference between a holding launch and a clip.

What the join path actually costs

A joiner triggers a fixed sequence: auth, permissions, inventory load, spawn chunk generation, then a replication burst. Only the last item scales with existing population; the rest is a per-joiner cost on the same cores running the tick loop, so ramp load can exceed steady-state load at half the player count.

Chunk generation is the expensive part: a player spawning in ungenerated terrain costs 80-400 ms of CPU, multiplied by every downstream server a proxy fan-out touches. On ARK and Rust the equivalent is base and entity streaming, which hits disk and memory bandwidth instead.

Join stage

Typical cost per joiner

Scales with existing pop?

Bottleneck

Auth and permission lookup

5-30 ms

No

Database or flat-file reads

Player data load

10-60 ms

No

Random reads, small writes

Chunk / region generation

80-400 ms

No (first visit only)

Single-thread CPU

Replication burst

20-120 ms

Yes

NIC egress, tick budget

Whitelist and UUID check

1-10 ms

Yes (file lock)

Disk and lock contention

Turn the ramp into a concurrency number

140 players over 11 minutes averages one every 4.7 seconds, but announcements front-load: treat the first three minutes as 40% of joins, about two per second. At 250 ms of CPU per join that is 0.5 cores of join work on top of the tick thread.

Add save and backup timers that ignore load: a backup starting at the announcement turns 0.5 cores into 1.5. Scheduling backups away from known windows is free capacity and the first fix before buying hardware.

Why steady-state sizing under-provisions the ramp

Steady-state planning assumes every player already exists in memory, with chunks loaded and data cached. Ramp load breaks that for every new player at once, so the working set jumps before page cache warms. A 32 GB node holding 200 players at 6 GB of heap can briefly need 9-11 GB.

Telemetry that predicts lag before players feel it catches steady-state drift, but only a ramp test catches this. That is why nodes pass a 200-player synthetic test and then crash under 140 real joins: the test never exercises the creation path. A realistic ramp test starts with 30 connected players and feeds sessions in at the target rate.

Proxies and front-ends absorb part of the spike

A proxy such as Velocity or BungeeCord moves auth and routing off the simulation node, and gives you a place to queue: players wait with a message instead of hammering the origin. A 90-second queue beats a node missing 40% of ticks.

Mind the proxy’s own cost: Velocity at 200 connections is light on memory but punishes single-thread performance if auth runs on one core. Pin it to a different core set and set its throttle below the origin’s accept rate.

Pre-warming and slot reservation

Do the expensive work before the rush: pre-generate a 200-500 block spawn radius during maintenance so first joiners read from disk. Use the same plugins and seed as production or the chunks will be discarded.

For known events, cap the normal join rate and raise it in a scheduled window, converting an unpredictable spike into a planned one. Reserve 15-25% of slots for the ramp and release capacity back after 30 minutes.

Monitoring the ramp separately from steady state

Steady-state dashboards sample every 30-60 seconds and average away the interesting window. Track join attempts, join failures, tick-time p99 and heap growth at 5-second resolution. The ramp signature is attempts rising while p99 crosses 1.5 times baseline: throttle there, not after players complain.

Join attempts and join failures per minute, sourced from the auth log rather than the game console.

Tick-time p99 at 5-second resolution during the first 15 minutes of any ramp.

Heap high-water mark and allocation rate, since mass joins allocate and rarely free immediately.

Disk read IOPS and average latency for the world volume during chunk streaming.

Egress per second against the commit, watching for replication bursts near the limit.

What to do at the moment of the spike

Have a written trigger and a written action. A workable default: if tick p99 exceeds twice baseline for three consecutive samples during a ramp, enable the join queue; if it recovers for five consecutive samples, raise the queue rate by 25%. That converts a binary failure into a controlled ramp without a manual decision under pressure.

If the node is saturated, the recovery order matters. Stop backups and log rotation first, then reduce view distance in high-entity areas, then throttle the join queue, and only then consider a restart. Restarting during a spike forces every connected player through the join path again at once, which is the load that broke the node.

Run one ramp rehearsal per quarter, not per incident. Schedule a 120-joiner window during low-traffic hours, watch the four ramp metrics, and record where the tick budget broke. That number, not the advertised slot count, is the capacity you can promise a community when the next announcement lands.

Per-joiner CPU cost, chunk generation budgets, proxy queues and 5-second ramp metrics for launch nights and announcement spikes.

[13

post-1514","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-game-server-setup
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.1 (Yoast SEO v26.1) -
