Power dominates the real cost: a 2U chassis with a 240 W TDP processor and 8 DIMMs draws 380 to 450 W at the wall under game load, and at $0.20/kWh that is $55 to $66 a month in electricity alone before cooling. Cooling adds 40 to 70% of that again through PUE. The monthly invoice is a rental; the cost of running it scales with watts and rack density.

The operational consequences show up as thermal throttling. Two nodes in a 1U space with poor airflow can idle at 60 °C and throttle under a world load, and a throttled node silently loses 10 to 20% of its clock, which reads as tick spikes nobody can explain from software alone. Sizing the power and cooling budget is part of sizing the game server. Current hardware tiers and their power envelopes are on the dedicated server plan comparison.

Watts per player: a number nobody quotes

Divide node power draw by player capacity and you get the honest efficiency figure for game hosting. A 400 W node running 100 players is 4 W per player; the same node running 25 players is 16 W per player. A tiny 120 W mini-PC node running 15 players is 8 W per player, which is why small communities get better economics from smaller hardware, not bigger hardware idling.

Kill the 8 W/player assumption the moment the node drops below 40% occupancy. Below that point you are paying to power idle silicon, and the correct move is either more instances per node or a smaller box, not a bigger one in anticipation of growth that may never arrive.

PUE and what cooling adds to the bill

Power Usage Effectiveness is total facility power divided by IT power. A good modern datacenter runs 1.2 to 1.35; older facilities with room-level cooling run 1.6 to 1.9. That multiplier applies to every watt your server draws. At PUE 1.8, a 400 W node costs 720 W of facility power, which is nearly double what the hardware spec suggests.

For you as a customer, PUE shows up in the rental price rather than a separate line. A provider with PUE 1.3 can price a node 15% cheaper and still make the same margin as one running 1.8. When comparing quotes, ask the facility’s measured PUE and its last 12 months of ups plus generator events.

Rack density and thermal throttling

Air-cooled racks cap out around 8 to 12 kW with standard containment; a 42U rack full of 2U dual-socket game nodes at 450 W each is 20 kW and needs careful airflow management or the top of the rack runs 8 to 12 °C hotter than the bottom. That thermal gradient causes the top nodes to throttle first, and customers on those nodes blame the game code.

If you are colocating your own game hardware, the fix is blanking panels, cold-aisle containment, and spacing high-TDP nodes. If you are renting, ask which rack position the node occupies and whether the provider maintains per-node thermal telemetry. A provider that cannot answer is one that discovers thermal problems from customer complaints.

Cost per kW: the table that matters

Item

Low draw

Mid draw

High draw

IT draw at the wall

180 W

380 W

640 W

Facility draw at PUE 1.5

270 W

570 W

960 W

kWh per month (PUE 1.5)

197

416

700

Energy at $0.20/kWh

$39

$83

$140

Energy at $0.10/kWh

$20

$42

$70

Colo cost per kW-month

$120

$120

$120

Players served comfortably

30

100

200+

Colocation circuits are normally billed per 1A at 208 V or per kW with a committed floor. A 1 kW circuit at $120 a month is typical for a Tier III facility in a competitive market; a 2 kW committed circuit is often $200 to $220 because of volume discounting. If you under-commit and burst past the limit, most providers bill overage at three to five times the committed rate, which is where colo budgets explode.

Sustained clock versus power limit

A modern 125 W TDP part will sustain boost indefinitely inside a properly cooled 2U chassis at 20 °C ambient. The same part in a 1U, or in a 2U with poor airflow at shared-chassis density, hits its thermal limit within 60 to 120 seconds of a full world load and drops to base clock. That is the difference between p99 tick of 22 ms and 34 ms on identical CPUs.

Measure it. Run a sustained all-core load for 30 minutes and read the clock every 30 seconds. If it falls by more than 8% from the advertised boost, the cooling or the power limit is the problem, and no amount of game tuning will fix it.

Planning the power budget

Add your draws, apply the facility PUE, then add 25% headroom for the committed circuit. Never size a circuit to the exact draw — a circuit at 90% load is at risk of tripping and leaves no room for a replacement node with a higher TDP. For a single 450 W node at PUE 1.5, budget 1 kW of circuit, not 700 W.

For rented dedicated nodes, the power budget shows up as a provider’s willingness to disclose TDP and cooling policy. If a provider will not quote the processor’s sustained power limit, assume it is running throttled and price accordingly.

The efficiency checklist

Ask for IT draw and facility PUE before quoting.

Compute watts per player at your expected occupancy, not the marketing maximum.

Confirm 2U or adequate airflow for any part above 100 W TDP.

Sustained-clock test for 30 minutes before signing a colo contract.

Commit circuits at 125% of expected draw, never 100%.

Budget a 20 to 25% higher energy figure for any facility without containment.

Power and heat are the costs that never show on the sales page and always show in the p99. Compute them before you compare the monthly rate, because a node that throttles is not cheaper — it is the same money for 15% less clock.
