You can rent the fastest CPU on the market and still lose every fight to a server sitting in the wrong city. Ping is mostly physics: data travels at about two-thirds the speed of light through fiber, and no amount of hardware fixes distance. This guide breaks down realistic latency between US East, US West, and EU locations, which region serves which player base best, and how to test a provider’s network before you commit your community to a data center.

What actually determines ping

Three things: the speed of light through fiber (roughly 200,000 km/s), the number of network hops and how congested they are, and the physical distance the data travels. A practical rule: every 100 km of fiber adds roughly 0.5 ms of latency, and every router hop adds a small processing delay. That is why a server in New York gives a player in London 75–90 ms while a server 50 km away gives 5–15 ms. Routing quality matters too — two data centers in the same city can differ by 20 ms if one peers badly with the networks your players use.

US East vs US West: which one wins?

For a North American audience, US East is usually the better default. The population is densest along the East Coast and in the Midwest, and US East gives decent latency to both coasts: about 60–85 ms for California players versus 5–25 ms for East Coast players. US West serves California and the Pacific Northwest at single-digit-to-30 ms but pushes everyone east of the Mississippi to 60–85 ms. If your community is split across the continent, US East minimizes the number of players stuck above 70 ms. If you are specifically serving California, Oregon, and Washington, US West is the right call.

The EU picture

Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and Paris are the traditional EU hubs, with Frankfurt the best-connected. For players across Western and Central Europe, a Frankfurt server delivers 10–40 ms. Eastern Europe and Scandinavia add 30–60 ms, and UK players sit at 30–50 ms on Frankfurt — marginally better on a London or Paris node. The EU is dense enough that one well-connected location covers most of the continent. The mistake to avoid is hosting EU players on a US server because the provider is cheaper; 75–110 ms of transatlantic latency is the difference between a playable and a frustrating server.

Serving a worldwide community

If your player base spans multiple continents, one server cannot win. The standard solution is regional instances: one US East, one Frankfurt, one Singapore or Tokyo, with a shared database or sync layer if the game supports it, and a region selector on your community page. A second option is a provider with global anycast, but that helps with static content — authoritative game traffic still travels the full physical path. For most communities, two or three well-placed instances beat one “central” server that disappoints everyone.

How to test before you rent

  • Ping the provider’s test IP or looking-glass server from the cities your players actually live in.
  • Run a traceroute to inspect the route: fewer hops and direct peering with major transit providers are good signs.
  • Ask which physical data center the IP is in — a “US” server in a small market can have worse routes than a major hub.
  • Check the provider’s upstream peers. Hosts that peer with big transit networks (Cogent, Lumen, Telia, and similar) handle peak traffic far better.
  • Rent a test machine for a week and run ping tests at 8 PM local time, when routes are most congested.

A practical decision guide

  • Players all in one metro area → host in that metro; target under 15 ms.
  • Players across North America → US East; accept 60–85 ms for the West Coast.
  • Players across Europe → Frankfurt or Amsterdam.
  • Players on two continents → two instances, not one compromise.
  • Pro players or tournaments → host in the event city, period.
