Dedicated Server Buying Checklist: 12 Specs to Verify Before You Sign

Signing for a dedicated server usually means a 12-36 month commitment, and the spec sheet you skim in two minutes determines performance for the whole term. Providers rely on that skim. Before you sign anything, verify these 12 items — with the numbers that matter — and you will avoid the most common buyer’s remorse in dedicated hosting.

1. Exact CPU model, generation, and boost clock

“Intel Xeon” is not a spec. An E5-2699 v3 (2014, 18 cores, 2.3 GHz base) and a Xeon Gold 6448Y (2023, 32 cores, 2.1 GHz base) are both Xeons with very different per-core performance. Ask for the full SKU, then look up its single-thread PassMark and boost clock. Game servers like Minecraft, Valheim, and Factorio scale with single-core speed first, so a newer 8-core can beat an older 18-core for those titles.

2. Core count versus clock speed

Eight fast cores beat 24 slow cores for most single-instance game servers. Twenty-four slow cores win when you host many instances or run Rust and ARK with 100+ players. Match the ratio to your workload instead of the marketing line “more cores = better”.

3. RAM type, capacity, and ECC

Verify DDR4 vs DDR5 and ECC vs non-ECC. For a 24/7 game server, ECC (registered) memory catches the single-bit errors that silently corrupt long-running worlds. Budget by game: 6-8 GB per vanilla Minecraft instance, 12-16 GB per modded pack, 16-32 GB for ARK and Palworld maps. Confirm the provider’s minimum allocation and whether you can upgrade without a re-provision.

4. Storage type and RAID level

NVMe delivers roughly 3.5 GB/s on a PCIe 3.0 link and up to 14 GB/s on PCIe 5.0; SATA SSDs top out around 550 MB/s; HDDs around 200 MB/s. Ask whether RAID is hardware or software and which level is deployed — RAID 1 for the OS, RAID 10 for game data is the sane minimum. Backups should never live on the same physical disk as the live world.

5. Network port speed and transfer policy

1 Gbps and 10 Gbps ports are different products. Check whether transfer is metered, unmetered, or billed on the 95th percentile. A 50-player ARK server can push 1-3 TB per month, and a busy Palworld server similar. If a plan says “unmetered”, ask about fair-use caps in writing.

6. DDoS protection

Always-on filtering beats on-attack scrubbing for game traffic, and mitigation capacity matters — providers advertising 1 Tbps+ are a different class from those sharing a small pipe. Confirm that UDP reflection attacks (NTP, SSDP, DNS amplification) are filtered, not just TCP SYN floods. 9. Setup fees, contract terms, and refunds

Annual billing often waives setup fees, but check the cancellation policy, notice period, and refund window. Watch for auto-renewal price jumps at month 13 — they are common enough that the checklist item pays for itself.

10. Remote management access

IPMI or an equivalent out-of-band console gives you reboot, BIOS access, and ISO mounting without opening a ticket. Without it, a hung kernel means waiting on support during peak hours.

11. Support scope and response times

Unmanaged means you patch and fix; managed adds a monthly fee but includes monitoring and tuning. Ask for a response-time commitment in writing and whether game-server tuning is part of the managed tier.

12. Operating system and licensing

Linux is free; Windows Server adds licensing cost, and SQL Server more still. A Windows license can add $20-40 per month to the effective price. Confirm whether the OS license is included in the quoted price or billed separately after signup.
